Criteria

The Lawyer of the Year Award
The BADC’s “Lawyer of the Year” award was established in 1950 to honor a member of the legal profession who has distinguished him or herself in the practice of law in terms of intellectual excellence, uncompromising integrity and the advancement of access to justice for those outside the legal profession.

The Judicial Honoree Award
The BADCs “Judicial Honoree” award is bestowed upon a member of the judiciary who has distinguished him or herself in the administration of justice in the District of Columbia.

The Young Lawyer of the Year Award
This award is presented to a young lawyer or lawyers whose professional and public service achievements merit special recognition. Although all commitments to civic participation and community service achievements that advance the state of the profession are considered, special consideration is given to contributions to the Bar Association of the District of Columbia and its Young Lawyers Section. Recipients will ordinarily be DC lawyers who are either under the age of thirty-seven or who have been engaged in the practice of law for less than five years.

The Honorable Annice M. Wagner Pioneer Award
Consistent with the example set by Chief Judge Wagner, candidates for this award have made extraordinary community and public service contributions. It is designed to recognize an individual who has taken risks, the benefits of which provide significant contributions to the advancement of others in the legal profession. This award recognizes an individual whose character places him/her in a position of leadership.

Self-nominations will be accepted for all awards.
