Jared L. Skillings, PhD, ABPP

Dr. Jared Skillings serves as the Chief of Professional Practice for the American Psychological Association. In this role, he is responsible to promote the practice of psychology and psychologists through federal and state advocacy, guideline development, legal and regulatory initiatives, public education, and health promotion. His job includes ensuring a place for psychologists in the health care marketplace and charting a path forward for the APA and the profession.

Dr. Skillings’ professional career includes leadership roles within large independent practice settings and complex integrated health systems. After three years in executive leadership for the largest independent practice group in the U.S., he served six years as Chief of Psychology for Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a $6.5 billion enterprise with more than 31,000 employees, 14 hospitals, and 230 outpatient service locations. At Spectrum Health, Dr. Skillings led behavioral health strategy and finance; program and talent development, initiatives for clinical access, quality and safety; coding and billing, and system integration. Under his leadership, the number of behavioral health providers increased more than 1000%, from five to 58 (including 32 psychologists), and psychology was integrated into primary care and specialty services like cardiology and surgery. Dr. Skillings also facilitated the granting of full medical staff privileges and employment benefits for psychologists. In his role as a clinician, he conducted psychotherapy for patients with complex health conditions and presurgical psychological evaluations for heart and lung transplant recipients.

In 2015, Dr. Skillings became the first early career psychologist in the United States to be triple board-certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) in clinical psychology, clinical health psychology, and behavioral and cognitive psychology. He is currently an Assistant Professor of psychiatry and surgery at the Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine. He has been Chair or President of several governance boards for APA, ABPP, and the Michigan Psychological Association. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Health Psychology and Michigan Psychological Association.

On a personal note, he has been married to his wonderful wife, Julie, for 18 years. They have five beautiful, adopted children – Hope (age 11), Violet (age 10), Anthony (age nine), Jonathan (age nine), and Gabrielle (age six).
