Old friends, new friends, lawyers and judges gathered for the Bar Association of DC’s Annual Meeting & Luncheon on June 19th at Clyde’s of Gallery Place. Outgoing President Allen Grunes warmly welcomed incoming President Dominic Vorv to assume the gavel. In all our 148 years, Dominic Vorv is BADC’s first President of Hispanic heritage. Hopefully, this will be the first of many! DC Court of Appeals Chief Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby formally inducted Dominic and BADC’s new Officers and Directors and swore in all of this year’s BADC leadership, including Foundation Trustees and Young Lawyers and Intellectual Property Sections Boards.
President Vorv informed BADC members that the theme of his term will be “Mental Health and the Law”. To launch this discussion, he invited BADC activist, Shirley Higuchi, to introduce her colleague from the American Psychology Association, Chief of Professional Practice Jared L. Skillings, PhD, ABPP. Dr. Skillings highlighted the similar skills required in the practices of law and psychology. He further offered the possibility of the BADC and the APA collaborating on socially pregnant issues such as gun violence and juvenile justice reform. A very provocative presentation by Dr. Skillings.
BADC Foundation President Keith Watters presented Foundation grants to the following very worthy organizations: Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, Counsel for Court Excellence, DC Refers, Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation, National Bar Institute, and Tzedek DC.
